D.C. Council member Vincent Orange introduced the D.C. Employee Repayment Act of 2012 to repay D.C. government employees who were furloughed during four legal public holidays without pay during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2012.
As a result of council member Vincent Orange’s leadership, thousands of teachers and D.C. government employees could potentially be repaid through this new legislation in light of a $240 million surplus.
The time has come for Mayor Vincent Gray and Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi to be held accountable; they cannot benefit from the perception that good fiscal management occurred, when reality demonstrates a portion of the $240 million surplus has been financed on the backs of working people.
Every dollar counts in this economic climate and this “mistake” has cost teachers and other D.C. government employee’s valuable resources while local leaders languish in their responsibility for sound fiscal management.
The fact still remains that the District stole $1,384.61 on average from each public school teacher—and we want our money back.

Hell yeah. Finally we are starting to get it together. I like what I am reading here. Thank you for feeling this need with this new union tool.
This is a decent effort by councilman orange. What is so distressing is that they are also using budget woes to strip the local school of needed jobs like teachers, social workers and library and media specialists.
Vincent gray is bogus!
If the CFO lied about the budget situation, he should be fired!
The public must be able to trust what the government says…..right now, we can trust anybody!
